TNPL to step up production of branded copier paper

Chennai , Aug. 22

TAMIL Nadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd (TNPL) plans to step up production of branded copier paper next year in line with its plans to focus on high-value segment.

Addressing the company's annual general meeting, Mr S. Ramasundaram, Chairman and Managing Director, TNPL, said the company will install a 200-tonne-a-day cut pack line in 2006-07.

TNPL has been focussing on this line, a high-growth segment in paper, and has hiked its production from 19,311 tonnes in 2003-04 to 28,141 tonnes in 2004-05 and in the current year it has set itself a target of 40,000 tonnes. Once the new cut pack line is set up in March 2006 production will increase significantly in 2006-07. TNPL now has a 150-tonne-per-day cut pack line.

The increased focus on copier paper in the high-value segment is also aimed at moving away from the low-end cream wove segment where there is heavy competition and margins are low. The high-value paper segment is growing at about 15 per cent.

The company is also drawn up a Mill Development Plan focussing on modernisation and expansion of the pulp mill. Under the plan, the company will set up an 800-tonne-per-day pulp mill which will use the elemental chlorine free process. This will help meet its requirement of pulp and also make available 120 tonnes surplus pulp a day, which can be marketed.

Company officials struck an optimistic note on the company's performance for the current year. Last year's rough patch was due to shortage of raw material (bagasse) and water. With sugarcane production looking up, the company has tied up with sugar mills for its bagasse requirement and also has sufficient water storage facilities.

According to Mr Ramasundaram, production was about 54,036 tonne between April and June representing about 94 per cent capacity utilisation. In July, the capacity utilisation was 98.55 per cent.
