Massive congestion at Haldia dock

Our Bureau

Kolkata , Aug. 22

THE Haldia Dock System (HDC) of Kolkata port is facing a massive congestion of ships at the Sandheads.

According to port sources, on Monday 27 vessels were waiting for berths. Of these, 19 are to load iron ore.

At present, HDC has 12 impounded docks and three oil jetties. Of these, only two berths have installations capable of mechanised loading of iron ore.

The situation has been continuing for over a week and the port authorities are yet to find a solution to the problem. Sources say that the present situation has developed because of a sharp increase in iron ore exports.
