THE Health Ministry does not want to give up the entire control of regulation on food products to the Ministry of Food Processing industries.

The Health Minister, Dr A. Ramadoss, has written to the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, to allow the proposed Integrated Food Bill to be brought under the purview of his ministry.

Top Government sources said, "The Integrated Food Law is being piloted by the Food Processing Ministry, but the Heath Ministry wants to retain control." Dr Ramadoss is believed to have told the Prime Minister that the Health Ministry had received about Rs 300 crore as World Bank credit for upgrading the food and drug testing labs across the country.

The Ministry is also in the process of setting up an integrated regulatory authority on the lines of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ensure safety standards, Dr Ramadoss is understood to have said.
