Dakshina Kannada co-op union launches 5-litre milk packets

THE Dakshina Kannada Milk Producers' Cooperative Union Ltd, Mangalore, has launched five-litre milk packets in the market.

The initiative is aimed at providing better service to big customers such as hotel owners.

Apart from providing quality milk in assured quantity, the jumbo pack will arrest the loss that is taking place while transporting it in cans.

The President of the Dakshina Kannada District Hotel and Restaurant Owners' Association, Mr K. Jagadish Shenoy, launched the five-litre milk packets in Mangalore on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Jayaprakash Reddy, Managing Director of Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) Ltd, said 13 cooperative milk unions in the State process 30.5-lakh litres of milk every day.

Of that, 17-lakh litres are being sold in the market.

The rest is being used for preparing various value-added products.

Dr B.H. Revanna, Director (Marketing), KMF, said the federation is supplying milk to Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Added to this, the federation sends 40,000 litres to Delhi every day, he added.

`Flavoured milk soon'

The President of the Dakshina Kannada Milk Producers' Cooperative Union Ltd, Mr B. Niranjan, said the union would introduce sterilised flavoured milk in the market in December this year. Initially, it will utilise around 30,000 litres a day for this purpose.

He said 490 milk producers' cooperative societies under the jurisdiction of the union collect 1.7-lakh litres of milk every day.

The union's modern processing facility in Mangalore produces various other value-added products of milk.
