Life-saving device for heart patients

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Aug. 23

WOCKHARDT Heart Hospital, which has launched specialise services for heart care in twin cities in association with Kamineni Hospital, has successfully implanted life saving automatic implantable cardioverter defibillator (AICD) or a pacemaker on a patient.

This device sends alerts if there is any abnormality in heartbeat and would help initiate preventive care early.

Dr V. Rajasekhar said AICD is a special type of pacemaker which when implanted in a patient can detect their potentially fatal rhythm disorders and correct them by delivering a well synchronised direct current shock directly to the heart.

This is typically done for patients who face high risk of developing ventricular tachycardia/ fibrillation. The device has been implanted to prevent such an occurrence. The procedure lasted 60 minutes.

According to a recent study implantation of this device results in a 60 to 70 per cent reduction in mortality in patients at a high risk for sudden death. This is the most powerful intervention for primary prevention of death in heart patients.

Dr Rajashekar in a statement said a major heart attack, unless treated properly, is likely to leave a sizeable part of the heart muscle permanently damaged.

A damaged heart has reduced pumping function. Such people are prone to electrical instability that results in fatal disorders.

It is possible to identify patients with increased risk for this form of malignant heart rhythm disorder, before they have had a cardiac arrest.
