THE Vijayawada-based Laila group of companies is planning to diversify into the tourism sector in a big way and take up construction of resorts at several important towns and cities in and outside the State, said Mr Ravi Varma, General Manager.

At a press meet here on Monday, he said the group was taking up tourism projects in Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Tirupati, Ooty, Kodaikanal and Goa.

He said the group had acquired the majority stake in Senora Beach Resorts here and taken operational control. "We are also bidding for another major project here - a health spa to be set up near Thotlakonda at an estimated cost of Rs 70 crore. We are hopeful of getting it," he said.

In Vijayawada, he said, the group had taken up construction of a three-star hotel, a shopping mall, food courts complex and a multiplex. "The work on the projects has commenced and initially we are spending Rs 30-35 crore. It may go up to Rs 60 crore or so," he said.

He said the Government had permitted the company to take up another tourism project on the Bhavani Island in the middle of the Krishna at Vijayawada. "We will set up an entertainment centre there, with water sports and other facilities. The estimated cost is around Rs 15 crore," he said.

Mr Varma said the Laila group, under the Chairmanship of Mr G. Ganga Raju, had specialised in recent years in taking up sick industries and turning them around. "We have taken over the Hanuman Co-operative Sugar Factory in Krishna district, renamed it Delta Sugars and turned it around. We have also taken over four units of Nizam Deccan Sugars," he said.

Mr D. Raghurama Raju, Director (operations), Senora Resorts, said a sports complex and 20 more rooms would be built in the resort shortly at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore. Till now, more than Rs 4 crore had been spent on the project.

"In an effort to draw more tourists, we are organising a concert by Aryans, one of the leading pop groups in the country, on August 27. The group is releasing another album in the first week of September. Before that, they are going to perform here," he said.
