THE Department for International Development (DFID), UK, has agreed to provide a Rs 860-crore grant for the State's health care sector. This follows a recent visit of top DFID official Andhra Pradesh.
The State Finance Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, said that the State is awaiting Centre's nod for this major initiative that would help develop the health care sector's manpower and physical infrastructure.
Speaking to newspersons after inaugurating a workshop on health, Mr Rosaiah said that the State would take up the issue of making it mandatory for doctors to serve in rural areas with the Medical Council of India (MCI). Rural areas are short of doctors and this is hampering the delivery of quality medical care.
The State Government has decided to recruit about 1,000 doctors and 650 of them have already been appointed and the process is on to complete the rest of the doctors.
In addition, the Government is finalising plans to post 150 doctors in tribal areas. Eighty doctors have already been recruited and counselling is continuing for the rest.
Earlier, the Finance Minister told officials to chart out a strategy to provide quality health care across the State and particularly in the rural areas.
The situation had not changed for decades due to the reluctance of doctors to go to far-flung areas and the inadequate infrastructure to offer good health care, he said.
