UAE withdraws ban on employment visas

Vimala Vasan

Abu Dhabi , Aug 23

IN a move that will have a strong impact on the UAE's expatriate labour market, the UAE Ministry of Interior has announced with immediate effect, the withdrawal of the six-month ban imposed by the immigration and residency authorities on various categories of workers at the time of cancellation of their employment visas.

The Naturalisation and Residency Departments have stopped stamping the ban on passports while processing cancellation of employment visas. There will also not be any iris scan at the airport that had been initiated sometime ago to check for violators of the ban, according to official reports in the UAE's dailies.

Hundreds of applications are being processed since Monday without slapping the six-month ban.

The decision to lift the ban comes as a huge relief for thousands of expatriate workers as well as employers.

The decision will help expats choose better jobs with more perks, while employers can freely select from the best talent available in the country.

According to the new decision, only housemaids will continue to be subjected to the ban rule as a special panel is studying various aspects of their case. The decision is in line with a recent Cabinet decree on sponsorship transfer of employees in the private sector, under which a fee of Dh1,500 for masters and doctorate holders, Dh3,000 for bachelors degree holders and Dh5,000 for certificates lower than bachelors degree would be levied.

A special panel comprising senior officials had been set up in February to look into various aspects of streamlining the residence and labour market laws, the reports added.
