Kolkata , Aug. 23

To tap the growing scope of business software solutions in the eastern region, SAP India has opened an office and a SAP training centre in Kolkata.

The training centre will provide students from Kolkata and the region access to the latest software, training materials, training methodologies and quality trainers.

With small and medium businesses (SMB) comprising 350 out of the 750 customers of SAP in India, SAP India has firmed up plans to offer personalised solutions to its clients in this segment. This will facilitate the company's plans to grow organically, according to Mr Alan Sedghi, President and Managing Director of SAP South Asia.

Addressing a news conference here on Tuesday, Mr Sedghi said India was among the top three emerging markets for SAP globally. In the first six months of 2005, the company achieved a growth of 50 per cent over the same period last year.

In the first half of calendar year 2005, the company added 70 new customers, including 42 SMB customers, to its clients' list. Significant momentum was achieved in key verticals such as consumer products, retail, utilities and banking.

Mr Sedghi said SAP India added 120 new customers, including 75 belonging to the SMB segment in 2004. For SAP, businesses with a turnover of up to Rs 400 crore are categorised as SMBs and one-third of the company's revenues in the Asia-Pacific region is generated from this segment.
