Telecommunications Corporate - Human Resources Motorola to hire 1,000 more Our Bureau
Bangalore , Aug 24 MOTOROLA is planning to increase its engineering headcount in India by 1,000 to take the total to 3,500 by the end of next year. Announcing this, Mr Ed Zander, Chairman and CEO, said the company had invested in people in India and also intended to increase its penetration in the market and bring low-cost mobile phones to the country. "We will consider India as a base for manufacturing when the volumes justify it," he said, adding that while manufacturing had moved from one low-cost location to another, Motorola's investment in the `high-cost' engineering talent pool was for the long-term. Motorola was also working on a sub-$40 mobile device and Mr Zander said the company looked to cater to the vast numbers of people not using a mobile phone yet. In India, Motorola was also working with local operators to deploy low- priced products, he said, adding that India centres were also working on some of the latest technologies in mobile devices. Motorola was working to develop Bluetooth wireless headphones for mobile devices that are voice-activated and can play music and fit on a pair of sunglasses etc. The company's target group was mostly 12-30-year-olds in most markets and the replacement phone would also drive business in Asia as elsewhere, Mr Zander indicated. The company has found that large numbers of mobile device owners upgrade after 9-12 months and the company intended to cater to them. Motorola would also consider partnerships for enabling security on its devices, Mr Zander said. Motorola was initially open to partnerships for back-end operations and distribution and would await volumes before considering manufacturing in India, he said. "The company has identified India as a technology development base and people at our Bangalore and Hyderabad centres work on core technology and software development for next generation wireless infrastructure technologies and infrastructure applications," said Ms Padmasree Warrior, Executive Vice-President and CTO. "The mandate for Motorola Labs in India is to engage in applied research in the areas of converged networks, autonomic engineering, enterprise applications, embedded systems and physical sciences, said Ms Warrior. In the past four months, Motorola launched Motorola Labs, expanded its Global Software group to Hyderabad and launched new facilities for its core network division and embedded communications computing businesses.
