Focus on designs, artisans told

HANDICRAFT artisans should set overseas market as their prime goal and pay adequate attention to design to withstand international competition, the Additional Development Commissioner of Handicrafts, Mr Sandeep Srivatsava, has said.
Mr Srivatsava was in the city to release the promotion folder for the Federation of Tie and Dye and Hand-printed textile cluster self-help group for Sungadi saree weavers at a function organised by the Small Industries Product Promotion Organisation (SIPPO). The folders are to be distributed to foreign embassies and industrial houses.
Speaking on the occasion, the Asst. General Manager of Nabard, Mr R. Srinivasan, said that a sum of Rs 25.15 lakh has been set apart for tie and dye cluster for the next three years. Further, a common facility centre for the cluster would be constructed and steps to impart skill upgradation, design training etc. would be organised for the benefit of the cluster members, he added.
The SIPPO Managing Director, Mr S. Rajagopal, stressed the importance of setting up separate clusters for musical instruments, Thanjavur paintings, woodcarvings and glazed tiles. Artisan credit cards to the tune of Rs 12.22 lakh provided by Indian Bank were disbursed to 52 artisans at the function here.
