Thiruvananthapuram , Aug 25

THE city-based Eco-solutions, an organisation that promotes ecological sanitation practices, has launched a new toilet pan to be used in dry composting toilets.

Speaking at the launch, Mr Paul Calvert, Director of Eco-solutions, said that the technology used in dry composting toilets is especially useful for people living in areas affected by water scarcity and for those in regions where the water table is high.

Dry composting toilets are based on the ecological sanitation approach that minimises water use, sanitises human excreta, recycles nutrients, and prevents water pollution, he added. Ecological sanitation can save 25-30 per cent of household water consumption, he said.

Toilets that use the dry composting technology are affordable, hygienic, and protect health by preventing contamination of groundwater resources. The compost produced by such toilets is free from odour and can be used to enrich the soil. The technology has been successfully used in coastal communities in Kerala and also in Sri Lanka, Mr Calvert said.

Mr C.P. John, Member, Kerala State Planning Board, who was present at the launch, released Ecological Solutions to Flush Toilet Failures, a book published by the organisation.
