System soon to monitor ongoing power projects

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Aug. 25

THE Government will set up a Central Monitoring System to keep a tab on the progress of ongoing power projects in the country. The Power Minister, Mr P.M. Sayeed, said the Monitoring System would focus on ensuring that unwarranted slippages in project clearances and construction schedule do not take place.

Speaking at the Consultative Committee meeting here, Mr Sayeed said that the introduction of information technology, particularly, in power distribution management, would go a long way in the overall efficiency growth in the sector. He said that transformers in each village and district would be linked to the Internet, enabling access to information on transmission and distribution efficiencies. The measure would also help tackle pilferages, he said.

The Minister said the power sector grew 7.5 per cent during the first quarter of the year and in June it stood at 9.3 per cent, better than all other infrastructure sectors. He said that the Ministry of Power has sanctioned Rs 1,044 crore for the IT scheme under the APDRP scheme. He called upon the States to utilise the funds responsibly since the States are the implementing agencies for most of the Central schemes in the sector.

Mr Sayeed said the implementation of IT will be done in a speedier way and shall be mainly directed to the distribution sector.
