Royal Enfield eyes defence market

Our Bureau

Chennai , Aug. 26

ROYAL Enfield, which manufactures the high-end `Bullet' motorcycles, expects to participate in the growing Defence market — both Indian and overseas.

While the current year's domestic `institutional sales' is expected to go up to 2,000 vehicles from 1,500 last year, a beginning has just been made in selling the Bullets to a Defence establishment abroad — 15 motorcycles were sold to the Sri Lankan air force a few months ago. Some African and SAARC countries were interested in buying from the company, Mr S Vaitheeswaran, Director-Sales and Marketing, told journalists here on Friday. While he did not want to estimate possible volumes — the business being mostly tender-based — he said opportunities were aplenty. The company's new Chief Executive Officer, Mr R.L. Ravichandran, said Royal Enfield intended to bring in a new bike by 2007.
