AP lines up measures to revive handloom sector

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Aug. 26

THE State Government has planned a series of measures to revive the handloom sector, including a pension scheme for weavers.

The Government has decided to extend Rs 1.5 lakh compensation package offered to suicide by farmers to the weavers henceforth. The package will come into retrospective effect from August 15.

In a statement from the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's office, the move follows an expert committee report on handloom and textiles and a meeting held today, which was attended by the State Finance and Handlooms Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah.

The Government also decided to sanction 50,000 old age pensions exclusively for weavers who have crossed the age of 50 years as a special category provision.

In addition to those being given this facility, even weavers who have crossed 60 years would also be covered.

Along with these, the Government has decided to provide Rs 3 crore as equity for the Handloom Weavers' Co-operative Societies during the year in order to help revive some of the dormant and defunct societies in the State.

Further, the meeting - chaired by the Chief Minister - decided to allocate Rs 1.80 core as one-time grant for the construction of Netha Bazars in 17 districts as per sanctions already made.

The Government has decided to sanction Rs 50 crore for the purchase of furnishing material, as this would help allocate this amount to APCO.

It may be recalled that the Expert Committee on Weavers' problems was constituted in July 2004 to study the problems faced by them and to suggest remedial measures.

The panel submitted its report earlier this week. These decisions are based on the panel's findings.
