Maruti workers' dismissal issue to be sorted out soon: Manmohan

Ambarish Mukherjee

New Delhi , Aug. 28

THE Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, has assured a delegation of trade union leaders that he is looking into the issue of around 150 employees who were dismissed by Maruti Udyog Ltd (MUL) four years ago following agitations by the company's union.

The Prime Minister had told the labour leaders "I am on the job, but it may take some time," according to the Secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress, Mr D.L. Sachdev, who was part of the delegation.

Earlier in the month, Dr Singh had met the victimised employees and their family members and had assured that he would take three to four weeks time to sort out the issue.

The AITUC is also taking up the issue of contract workers used by MUL. As of now, the number of contract workers are two to three times more than the regular employees. Though they are working with MUL, they do not get their salaries from Maruti, but from the firm which MUL has contracted for manpower. This is not legally permissible for jobs that are perennial in nature, Mr Sachdev told Business Line.

"We are hopeful that the wrong decisions of the erstwhile NDA Government at the Centre and the Chautala Government in Haryana would be reviewed properly by the present Governments at the Centre and the State," he said.

With regard to the recent labour unrest and police atrocities on the workers of Honda Motors, Mr Sachdev said now the priority is to see that all the cases against the workers are withdrawn.
