Oil price burden

The Petroleum Minister, Mr Mani Shankar Aiyar, wants us to share some of the burden of the rising international oil prices. What he is not telling us is that a substantial portion of oil prices goes to the Central and State governments as taxes and not to the oil companies. The proposed hikes in petrol and diesel prices will not affect the upper middle-class or the rich, but will impact the lower middle-class, the poor and the farmers. Why not invest more in exploration of oil and gas in India? In the past few years, gas has been struck in several places.

R. K. Mani
