Green signal

The recent rule of the Ministry of Environment and Forests that it is mandatory for any large construction project (meant for more than 1000 people, or investment of Rs 50 crore) from which more than 50,000 litres of sewage is discharged per day to get environmental clearance is welcome.

The demand by the builders' lobby that the rule be scrapped on the grounds that getting the clearance is a slow process that "retards development" and "that it would breed corruption" are totally unjustified.
