RESIDENTS in 788 apartments in Dharavi, Sion and Kurla transits camps, which have been forcibly occupied, would be evicted immediately, the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) officials informed newspersons on Wednesday.
The cleared apartments would be used for housing the residents from the 107 dilapidated buildings.
Meanwhile, residents of Zariwala chawl in Mahim and Butawala chawl in Mazgaon met MHADA officials for discussions on their shifting to transit camp in Gorai. The officials said the residents would be convinced to move out from their old buildings rather than risking their lives.
Tenants of both the chawls have refused to shift to Gorai transit camp complaining that the transit camp was far-off from their place of work and education institutions of their children. They have demanded accommodation at a transit camp near their present homes.
The decision to evict residents living in dilapidated buildings was taken following a series of old building collapses in the city during the last few days.
