THE Confederation of Indian Industry's Delhi State Council and the Delhi State Industrial Development Corporation (DSIDC) have joined hands to set up a National Institute for Jewellery Design and Technology in Delhi.
At a session on `Delhi: An emerging gems & jewellery destination' organised jointly by CII (Delhi) & DSIDC, jewellers, designers and exporters discussed the vision for Delhi as a significant player in the gems and jewellery sector for North India.
The session among other issues focused on the emerging threat from China for the industry. China is becoming a major competitor, with the improving quality of workmanship, cheap and disciplined labour and increasing base of domestic consumers. This underscores the need for trained manpower for the Indian industry.
In a bid to cater to this need, the institute is planning to provide training in courses relevant to the industry in flexible modules, with the aid of the latest technology and tools.
Unveiling the plans for the institute, Mr Jalaj Shrivastava, Managing Director, DSIDC, said that the courses to be conducted under the aegis of the institute include basic and advanced courses in jewellery design, diamond grading, gemology, computer aided design & manufacture, metal setting, casting, filing, refiners, and rubber mould making techniques.
