Railways Baalu reviews rail links to ports Our Bureau
New Delhi , Aug 31 THE Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Mr T.R. Baalu, today reviewed the railway connectivity to major ports and their future requirements at a meeting of the Chairpersons of all the major ports and senior railway officials. The meeting assessed the existing traffic, infrastructure and the projected growth in the coming years. Addressing the officials, Mr Baalu called for effective coordination between the Railways and port authorities for early implementation of ongoing projects and jointly chalk-out a time-bound action plan to meet the targets. The needs and projections made by ports were brought to the notice of Railway officials and the necessity to finish pending projects in a time bound manner was underscored, according to an official statement. Some of the projects discussed include doubling of line in Panvel-Jasai section for Jawaharlal Nehru port, Wadala-Kurla dedicated freight line for Mumbai port, broad gauge conversion of Bhilri-Samdari section for Kandla port, completion of Hassan-Mangalore rail link and construction of by-pass to serve New Mangalore port, handling of iron ore at Wagon Tippler at Goa port, construction of rail link to Vallarpadam International Container Transshipment Terminal for Cochin port, according to the release. The statement added, "On the eastern coast, doubling of track between Madurai and Dindigul for Tuticorin port, running of dedicated fixed path container trains from Tuticorin and Chennai port to Northern Indian locations, connectivity to the proposed iron ore and container terminals at Ennore port on SPV model, development of a separate interchange yard at Mindi for Visakhapatnam port, construction of heavy axle dedicated railway link from iron ore mines/steel plants to Paradip Port, doubling of Rajgoda-Haldia stretch of Haldia-Panskura rail line for Kolkata Port Trust came up for discussion".
