Mumbai , Aug. 31

UNDER a refurbishment programme for its fleet, Air India has signed an agreement with the US-based Thales, an electronics company providing services to aerospace, defence and IT sectors, for the installation of the latter's entertainment system on six B747-400s owned by the carrier.

With the retrofit programme to upgrade the airline's on-board entertainment service, every seat would have digital audio and video on demand, with a 10.4-inch display on first and business class seats, and an 8.4-inch on economy class seats, an official statement said.

Further, every screen would be a touch-screen, and each seat will have a noise-cancelling module for high-fidelity sound and laptop power.

The Top Series Advanced Passenger Entertainment System, a fully integrated, modern in-flight entertainment system, was first introduced in 2004.

As part of the contract, Thales will work closely with the airline to ensure that the passenger's experience is the best. The refurbishment programme for its B747-400 aircraft would include cabin interior upgradation, replacement of existing economy class seats with new seats, providing the latest in-flight entertainment system with audio and video on demand, Internet and phone facility for all passengers including personal monitors, improvement in cabin lighting, and replacement and upgradation of existing galleys and toilets.

The refurbishment programme for the airline's Airbus 310 would include seat refurbishment and cabin interior upgradation.
