Jet to decide on fuel surcharge, fare hike in 4 weeks

New Delhi , Aug. 31

WITH global oil prices touching an all-time high, Jet Airways will decide within four weeks on whether it will impose a fuel surcharge, increase fares or continue with the existing fares on its domestic flights.

"All options are being examined and a decision can be expected in about four weeks," the airlines Chief Operating Officer, Mr Peter Luethi, told newspersons. Any decision by Jet can lead to others following suit.

The airline, like several others here, had raised its domestic fares earlier this year. However, with the global price of oil crossing the $70-per-barrel mark in the recent past, several global airlines have been forced to charge a fuel surcharge to offset the rising cost of oil.

Meanwhile, the private sector airline has sought Government permission to operate a daily flight to Singapore from Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai. It also plans to operate a three-times-a-week flight on the Delhi-Amritsar-Birmingham sector.

"We plan to operate flights to Singapore and Birmingham from the forthcoming winter season. The airline plans to utilise a Boeing 737-800 aircraft to Singapore, while the Airbus A-340 aircraft will be used to operate to Birmingham," Mr Luethi said.
