NCC to take up anti-AIDS work

HYDERABAD: The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is slated to sign an MoU with the United Nations to take up anti-HIV/AIDS programmes in the country, according to its Director-General, Mr Mohan C. Bhandari.

The NCC is expected to get about $2 lakh for the purpose. It would be spearheading the third phase of the National HIV/AIDS campaign, he told newspersons here.

About 5,000 cadets are being trained for the 5-year campaign to be taken up from March 2006 to February 2011. The NCC has 13 lakh cadets, though the number constitutes only four per cent of the eligible youth in the country.

Referring to the NCC activities in Andhra Pradesh, Mr Bhandari said the State Directorate is the second largest after Uttar Pradesh. It has a total of 1,31,686 cadets. The scheme has been introduced in 2,020 colleges and about 268 colleges are wait listed.
