Coimbatore , Sept.1

THE Tamil Nadu Minister for Backward Classes Welfare, Mr S.M. Velusamy, who inaugurated the four-day international conference on pulp and paper industry `India Paper 2005' here today, has suggested that the Central Pulp and Paper Research Institute (CPPRI) open its regional R and D wing in the Sate.

The Minister pointed out that with over 200 paper units operating in the State, an R and D unit of the CPPRI would go a long way to strengthen the needs of the industry.

Mr Velusamy also called upon the paper industry to promote alternative packaging material to plastic bags and this would help increase the application of biodegradable material and at the same time eliminate the environmental problem caused by plastic bags.

The Minister said that the State under the AIADMK regime offered good investment scope for those setting up new projects in the paper industry.

The pro-industry policies of the Government and the perfect law and order situation prevailing in the State would ensure proper investment climate for entrepreneurs, he added

The fair and the technical conference of the paper industry is organised by the Delhi-based industrial event management group, Sai Expocon India Pvt Ltd in association with the CPPRI, Kumarappa National Handmade Paper Institute and the Kraft Paper Manufacturers Association of South India.

Over 60 participants representing the paper machinery manufactures, paper and board producers, paper technology providers and allied services figure in the trade fair being held at the Codissia Fair complex. Coinciding with the fair, a technical conference on `Cleaner production in pulp and paper industry' will be held for two days from tomorrow.

Lab likely in TNPL: The CPPRI Director, Dr A.G. Kulkarni, later said that his institute is favourably looking at the scope of setting up its regional laboratory in Tamil Nadu. In the event of State Government extending infrastructure support for locating the R and D lab, the institute will go ahead and establish it. In such an eventuality, the lab might be located on the premises of the State-owned Tamilnadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd.
