Thiruvananthapuram , Sept. 1

THE city-based Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) is establishing a national test centre for medical devices.

Mr Kapil Sibal, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, will lay the foundation stone for the new facility on Saturday, an official press release said.

The State Finance and Excise Minister, Mr Vakkom Purushothaman, is scheduled to preside over the function.

The national test centre for medical devices, which is being established with funds provided by the Union Government, will occupy an area of 1.8 lakh square feet and is expected to be fully operational in three years.

The facility will provide comprehensive testing services under `good laboratory practices' to India's medical devices industry.

Major areas of testing that will be covered at the facility include functional and safety evaluation of medical devices using in-vitro simulated systems, functional and safety evaluation using small and large animal models, evaluation of device packaging including aspects such as shelf life and so on, the release added.

The proposed centre will operate under the aegis of the Biomedical Technology Wing of SCTIMST.

When completed, the new facility will replace the existing medical devices testing laboratory.

Besides testing facilities, the Biomedical Technology Wing of the Institute also has a wide range of facilities for research and development in areas such as biomaterials and medical devices.

Over the past 20 years, this unit of SCTIMST has successfully developed and transferred technologies for a range of critical care medical devices such as blood bag, oxygenator, heart valve, hydrocephalus shunt, dental composites and so on.
