Visakhapatnam , Sept. 2

ROCK dredging has commenced at Visakhapatnam port to deepen the inner channel to facilitate the entry of bigger vessels.

Dredging Corporation of India invited tenders on behalf of the Visakhapatnam Port Trust for executing rock dredging and four companies - Jaisu Shipping Private Ltd, Gammon India Ltd, Dhatri Dredging and Construction Private Ltd and Orissa Construction Company - submitted the bids for the work.

Dhatri Dredging and Construction, which offered to execute the work for Rs 24.30 crore, has been chosen for the project. The dredging work is scheduled to be completed in 10 months. The areas to be dredged are the inner turning circle up to 12.35 metres and the inner channel up to 11.8 metres. The outer turning circle will be dredged up to 19 metres and the area in front of the LPG berth up to 16 metres.

Grab dredgers, hopper barges and drilling & blasting equipment will be used to execute the project.

The DCI has clarified that it will not be liable for any risk, eventualities and liabilities during the execution of the work. It has only assisted the Visakhapatnam Port Trust in invitation and finalisation of tenders.

The Visakhapatnam Port has so far handled more than 22 million tonnes of cargo during the current financial year against a target of 55 million tonnes.

Last year, the port crossed the 50-million tonne mark, becoming the first Indian port to do so.
