Outsourcing `Big scope for India in outsourced product development space' Our Bureau
Chennai , Sept. 2 THERE is a huge opportunity for companies in India in oustsourced product development (OPD) space with more foreign companies outsourcing their software product development. But, the lack of skill among fresh graduates is a major concern for the industry, according to Mr Gowri Shankar Subramanian, Chief Executive Officer, Aspire Systems. At a panel discussion on opportunities and challenges in OPD organised by Nasscom and Aspire Systems, he said that India is now recognised as a key player in OPD. According to various estimates the market size of OPD in India is around $3 billion and is expected to grow to $11 billion by 2008. The OPD includes the overall process of strategy, organisation, concept generation, product and marketing plan creation and evaluation and commercialisation of a new product. The product development industry in India employs around 80,000 people, and the number is estimated to increase to 3 lakh by 2008. Getting people is not an issue but the concern is the suitability of people coming out of the colleges for the industry, he said. According to Mr Jagdish Jha, Vice-President, Symphony Services, India, increasingly large number of commercial software works would be undertaken in India. A proof of this trend include venture capital firms increasing funding to ISVs (independent software vendor) having an India strategy and large multinationals like Oracle, Cisco and SAP scaling up their operations in India, he said.
