Alternative Medicines PM inaugurates National Institute of Siddha Our Bureau
Chennai , Sept. 3 SCIENTIFIC institutions and companies should collaborate to incorporate modern procedures and processes in Siddha, the traditional system of medicine, said the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh. Inaugurating the National Institute of Siddha, which includes a Siddha hospital and college, near Chennai today, he said the institute should work with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, the Indian Council for Medicine and pharmaceutical companies. They should standardise frequently used formulations and develop modern manufacturing processes and patent them. The National Institute of Siddha can reform and develop curriculum from graduates and post graduates. It should digitise the invaluable medicinal formulations in palm leaf manuscripts to make them available to modern science, he said. The world is increasingly turning to holistic and traditional systems of medicines. Such traditional medicine systems should also be utilised in the National Rural Health Mission being implemented by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The Union Minister of Health, Dr Anbumani Ramadoss, said that the National Institute of Siddha set up at a cost of Rs 47 crore would include a 120-bed hospital. It will conduct courses and research in this traditional Tamil system of medicine said to be over 5,000 years old. The Government is implementing a Rs 120-crore project for scientific validation of traditional medicines. This would help acceptance of such systems of practice worldwide. Now developed countries resist the spread of such systems, he said.
