Chennai , Sept. 5

KAILASH Shipping Services has inaugurated its container freight station (CFS) near Manali, in Chennai, at a cost of Rs 10 crore.

The facility in Kadapakkam village is built in 8.76 acres, and services offered in it include bonded warehousing, cargo storage and distribution, according to the company's Managing Director, Mr C. Ramprasad.

Indian Overseas Bank has funded Rs 4 crore for the project, and the balance amount has come from internal resources, he told newspersons. In the first year, the company expects revenue of Rs 10 crore, he said.

The facility has 10,000 sq ft covered shed to handle import cargo, another covered shed of 10,000 sq ft for storing export cargo and an open paved area of 2.10 lakh sq ft for both stuffed and empty containers. The CFS will also provide 5 acres of paved yard to accommodate 3,000 TEUs (twenty foot equivalent units), he said.

According to Mr Ramprasad, the CFS was the 14th such facility available in the city and three more are to come up in a few months. With increasing container traffic out of the Chennai port, there will be business for all.

The Chennai Container Terminal Ltd, the private operator at the port, handled 5.2 lakh TEUs last year, and of this one third boxes went to various CFS. This year, the terminal is likely to handle 6.5 lakh TEUs, he said.
