Coimbatore , Sept. 8

ORGANISERS of the United Planters Association of Southern India 112th conference are planning to position the South Indian teas appropriately in the domestic and international markets by unfolding the hidden quality attributes.

They will do this by selecting the best of the 133 short-listed entries (which have now reached the second round of screening) for `The Golden Leaf India Awards - Southern Tea Competition 2005', slated for September 19.

The attention now appears to be drawn towards `Awards Night', when the prize-winning entries would not only steal the show but also get to be showcased in the International Tea Conference to be held in China between September 25 and 27.

A panel of international and national judges comprising eminent experts in the field have been involved in the screening and selection process. The Tea Board is backing the competition.

Mr N. Dharmaraj, Convener (Organising Committee), The Golden Leaf India Awards (Southern Tea Competition 2005), told presspersons here on Thursday that these were not `speciality teas' but samples drawn from commercial teas, backed by a minimum quantity of 750 kg. The producers who eventually bag the award would be allowed to use the quality stamp and market these in the national and international markets.

Upasi had initially received 227 entries of which 133 have been short-listed for the second round of screening. These include six entries from the bought leaf factories, 26 from the Wayanad region, 17 Travancore teas, 19 from a separate group comprising small districts such as Kollam, Palghat, Chikmagalur, Tirunelveli etc., six from Annamalai region, 19 High Range teas and 25 Nilgiris Teas.

Mr Dharmaraj said the organic and green teas formed a separate category.
