Announcements Migrant workers, villagers clash in Jamnagar; RIL declares day off Our Bureau
Ahmedabad , Sept. 8 CLASHES between migrant labourers and villagers at Moti Khavdi in Jamnagar district of Gujarat have left 15 people injured and forced Reliance Industries Ltd to declare a day off for its workers in its refinery. According to police, clashes erupted between migrant workers and locals over some minor dispute on Tuesday. "We are taking adequate care to ensure that peace is maintained. With Reliance announcing expansion of its refinery and construction work at the Essar Oil Ltd refinery at neighbouring Vadinar in full swing, we expect an influx of nearly 40,000 labourers from outside the State," a senior police official said. The local administration is working with the villagers to establish peace committees to avoid any conflicts in future, he said. A Reliance spokesperson said that the paid holiday was declared as a precautionary measure because the company wanted to ensure safety of its contract workers. "Some of our contract labourers have been affected by the clashes. We decided to give them a day-off so that they could stay in the safety of their homes," the Reliance spokesperson said here. He, however, clarified that the clash was not between Reliance workers and villagers. "There is a large population of migrant labourers in the area. They work in the different industrial units in Moti Khavdi, including our refinery. It would be incorrect to say that there was a dispute between Reliance workers and others," the spokesperson said.
