A plantation worker on her way home near Mananthavady in Wayanad district. The proportion of work force employed in agriculture is in steady decline with cultivators and the agricultural labour together accounting for 69.98 per cent of the working population in the country in 1971 going down to 59.63 per cent in 1991. The decline in Kerala is much sharper with the figures going down to 23.27 per cent in 2001 from 48.48 per cent in 1971.
