Mangalore , Sept. 9

THE Social Welfare Department in Karnataka has asked the Indian Institute of Management - Bangalore (IIM-B) to study the reasons for the failure of some of the developmental schemes. It has also asked the institute to suggest solutions for them.

Inaugurating a capacity building workshop for the officials of the Karnataka Backward Class Development Corporation (KBCDC) at Dharmasthala in Dakshina Kannada district on Friday, the Karnataka Social Welfare Minister, Dr Y. Nagappa, said that people belonging to scheduled caste (SC), scheduled tribe (ST) and backward classes are not getting the benefits of various developmental schemes, in spite of the Government spending a huge amount on those schemes.

The IIM-B has been asked to give suggestions on enriching the department's knowledge, after studying the drawbacks of the schemes. The IIM is likely to submit the report in four months, he said.

In the last fiscal, the department extended a financial assistance of Rs 96 lakh for eight candidates, belonging to SC and ST community, to undergo pilot training at Chennai. This year, 20 candidates from SC, ST and backward class will be given such assistance to undergo pilot training. It is for the first time that a government department in the country is providing such assistance for the candidates of weaker sections, Dr Nagappa said.

The Government will construct 50 hostels in the State for students of SC, ST and backward class. There are also plans to provide computer training for 1,000 students from these communities, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr D. Veerendra Heggade, President of the Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Programme, said steps should be taken to strengthen the existing developmental schemes and implement them effectively. Poor should be made aware of such developmental schemes, he added.

The Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Minister, Mr Jabbar Khan Honnali, was also present.
