Supply Chain Management Cold storage facility by 2006-07: Concor To launch 4 ICDs this fiscal Our Bureau
Kolkata , Sept. 12 THE cold storage facility that is being set up by the Container Corporation of India (Concor) near Delhi, as part of its plan to launch cold chain, should be ready for operation by the second quarter of 2006-07, according to Mr Rakesh Mehrotra, its Managing Director. "The work on creation of the facility will start within the next couple of months," Mr Mehrotra told Business Line here on Monday, adding, "it will mainly cater to the requirements of fruit-growers of Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Jammu & Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh." Concor, as its Managing Director indicated, would also launch four inland container depots (ICDs) within the current financial year and these would be located at Bhopal, Jalandhar, Chandigarh and Mirzapur. "There are proposals to launch two more - at Gurgaon and Udaipur - though not necessarily in the current fiscal," he said. Right now, Concor has 55 ICDs all over the country and, barring a few, all of them are earning profits. Twenty nine of these ICDs are combined, i.e. they cater to both international and domestic traffic while another 18 handle only international traffic and the balance exclusively domestic traffic. The Amingaon (Guwahati) ICD, till recently a seasonal ICD handling only tea exports during the tea season, is now handling domestic traffic also. The same is true about the one located at Guntur/Anaparti in Andhra Pradesh. Originally installed to handle only tobacco, it now handles a variety of other items. The Balasore ICD in Orissa, after having remained dormant for a long time, has now become active, handling mainly domestic traffic. The ICDs proposed to be launched in the current fiscal will mainly cater to the international traffic, except the one to be located at Bhopal, which will handle both domestic and international. The Birgunj ICD in Nepal, which is being run by a joint venture company, in which Concor is the major partner, would continue to be in the red in the current fiscal, for the second year in succession, Mr Mehrotra said.
