A farmer sowing paddy in his field in Kalpetta in Kerala's Wayanad district. The area under rice in the country during the current kharif season has increased to 328.56 lakh hectares (lh) from 318.49 lh during the corresponding period last year. However, coverage in Kerala has declined by 15 per cent in comparison. This is despite a rise in cultivable land in the State.
