Mescom urges KERC to hike power tariff

Our Bureau

Mangalore , Sept. 13

THE Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (Mescom) has requested the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) to increase power tariff as proposed by it.

Participating in the KERC public hearing here on Tuesday, Mr S. Sumanth, Managing Director of Mescom, said the company, which was formed in 2002, was bifurcated into Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Company on April 1, 2005.

At present, Mescom has five revenue districts under its jurisdiction. A hike in power tariff will help it in providing better service to its customers, as Mescom has envisaged several improvement plans under its jurisdiction.

System improvement works to the tune of Rs 39.89 crore programmed for 2005-06 include drawing new lines and bifurcation of the existing lines, and provision of additional transformers, he said.

To a query raised by one of the participants on energy audit, Mr Sumanth said energy audit is being done feeder-wise, and there are 426 feeders. Work for rectifying problems in 40 feeders is already being taken up and will be completed by December.

More than 75 per cent of the un-metered installations have been metered now. Actions are also being taken to read all these meters to carry out energy auditing efficiently, he said.

To improve the quality of power supply to industries, Mescom has taken steps to provide exclusive power lines to the industry, if additional consumption is ensured by the customer. This additional cost is being shared by the customer and Mescom. Already two industries in Shimoga have taken this facility. With this, Mescom is earning additional Rs 8 lakh revenue every month, he said.

Mescom will launch its Web site soon, he added.
