KERC to issue orders by Sept 30

Our Bureau

Mangalore , Sept. 13

THE Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) will issue final orders on the separate proposals by the electricity supply companies (Escoms) for a hike in the power tariffs, by September 30. In turn, Escoms will notify the revised order.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday after the completion of the two-day public hearing, the KERC Chairman, Mr K.P. Pandey, said that the KERC's order would be uniformly applied to all the Escoms.

To a query on the proposals for a different tariff for each Escom, he said it would be a good system. "It may come in future, not now," he said. The commission cannot work out different tariff figures on its own. "We advice the companies to have rate for their own Escoms. I hope they will consider it in future," he said.

The aim of the commission is to see that the consumer gets best service at the most affordable rates. It is also KERC's intention to see that the Escoms are able to earn sufficient profits to survive and do business.

He said that Escoms should be allowed to perform individually. They should have the power to appoint and fire the staff. At present, most of the employees of Escoms are deputed by the Karnataka Power Transmission Company Ltd (KPTCL).

Asked if any private company has shown interest in acquiring Mescom, he said he was not aware of any such development. However, Mr Pandey said, in a service area there has to be competition.

The public hearing in Mangalore received good response from the consumers. Of the more than 5,000 objections received by the commission, 758 were given answers individually at the hearing, he said.
