SEZs to dot coastal corridor along Vizag, Kakinada soon

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Sept. 13

THE Andhra Pradesh Government is set to develop the coastal corridor between Vizag and Kakinada dotting with special economic zones.

These special zones seek to woo downstream industries following the announcement of major gas finds in the Krishna-Godavari basin.

The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajashekhara Reddy, said with recent announcements by the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd and Oil and Natural Gas Commission Ltd to locate their refineries in the State, and announcements made by Reliance, ONGC and Gujarat Petroleum on major gas finds, have enthused the Government to develop this stretch as a high growth zone.

Speaking at an interactive session on special economic zones (SEZs), organised by consultants PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC), Dr Reddy said that the concept of SEZs is set to catch up with industries and the State has already completed acquisition of about 700 acres out of 1,000 acres for the SEZ.

Taking advantage of the gas find in the K-G basin, the Government plans to woo other major infrastructure projects providing proactive support to them through single window services. In fact, wherever they require, an escort officer would be provided that they do not have to go around for clearances.

Referring to the recent Government move to establish a SEZ in partnership with ONGC, Dr Reddy said the Government has taken a small share in the SEZ and would prefer to be a facilitator.

"To attract companies, the Government has already brought down power tariff from April 1 by about 75 paise per unit and this would be further reduced by 75 paise for new industries. By providing quality infrastructure, we would be able to attract more companies to locate their manufacturing units in the State," he said.

Earlier, the Principal Secretary, Industries, Ms Lakshmi Parthasarathy, said about 7,000 acres has been notified for SEZ, and the acquisition process for land has begun. Both Gangavaram and Krishnapatnam ports would be developed in an integrated approach. Soon an ordinance, to pave the way for SEZ enactment, would be promulgated.
