Letters Drug prices
Prices of essential drugs have soared. The cost of drugs prescribed to control hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol common ailments among the elderly is exorbitant. It is becoming increasingly difficult for senior citizens to afford these medicines. Some commonly prescribed medicines cost Rs 210 for ten tablets. An average senior citizen spends more money on medicines and doctor consultations than on food. The laboratory and consultation fees are prohibitive. According to a press report based on a recent study of drug prices, a tablet costing Rs 2.90 to the manufacturer is retailed at Rs 42. This is just one example of the extent to which consumers are being exploited. The Central government should take immediate and effective action to control drug prices and also set norms for consultation fees of private doctors and nursing homes in the interest of consumers. H.
