Rlys exceeds earnings target during Apr-Aug

THE Indian Railways has surpassed its total earnings as well as freight tonnage target during the first five months (April-August) of this fiscal.

The total earnings of the Indian Railways during the period from April 1 to August 31 was Rs 21,181.11 crore, up 15.83 per cent compared with Rs 18,287.05 crore during the corresponding period of last year, said a release. The total earnings exceeded the budgeted target of Rs 20,043.79 crore by 5.67 per cent, said an official release. The total goods revenue earnings of Rs 14,135.60 crore showed an 18.28-per cent increase during the period compared with Rs 11,950.50 crore in the corresponding period last year. It also exceeded the budgeted target of Rs 13,175.06 crore for the same period.

The total number of passengers booked during the period was 24.1789 crore (22.5549 crore), registering an increase of 7.20 per cent. In terms of tonnage, the Railways carried 262.95 million tonnes of revenue earning freight during the first five months of the current fiscal, which is 5.66 mt higher than the target, said a release.

The freight transported during the period shows an increase of 25.84 mt over the freight carried during the corresponding five-month period last fiscal. Moreover, the Railways carried 51.6 mt of freight during August 2005.
