Mangalore , Sept. 14

THE Chairman of the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), Mr P. Tamilvanan, has stressed the need for marketing of ports.

Inaugurating a seminar on `WTO and engineering profession' organised by the Officers' Association of Kudremukh Iron Ore Co Ltd (KIOCL) to mark the Engineers' Day , he said the strategic location of all the major ports should be used in marketing them.. The country's major ports had witnessed significant developments in infrastructure and services, he said, adding that the number of major ports had increased from five in 1951 to 12 now.

The 12 major ports had handled nearly 383 million tonnes cargo in the last fiscal, he said. He attributed this to effective coordination between all sections of the port, including the engineers.

He said KIOCL had contributed more than five million tonnes cargo to the port.
