Mangalore , Sept. 14

THE Area Control Centre at Mangalore airport has extended the services of Air Traffic Control (ATC) to 24 hours with effect from September 12.

A press release by Mr M.R. Vasudeva, Airport Director, Airports Authority of India, said here that the Mangalore airport has joined the club of other major airports in the country that provide round-the-clock air traffic services to over flying flights.

The area control services are extended to all the flights over flying within a distance of 200 nautical miles centred at Mangalore VOR (Very high frequency Omni Range).

This airspace comprises portions of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Goa and Maharashtra.

Earlier, AAI was providing area control services from Mangalore airport between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m.

During the remaining period, only flight information service was provided to the aircraft from Chennai.

Aircraft, which are airborne, will have to fly a long distance during their journey and will have to remain in contact with one of the ATC units always.

Mangalore will be one such unit and will provide round-the-clock services hereafter, he said.

The other centres providing these services in southern region include Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram and Hyderabad. Indian Air Force provides area control service in Bangalore.

Mr Vasudeva said that AAI has plans of providing radar-based area control services in Mangalore centre.
