Industry Associations KCCI urges Karnataka to hold annual IT event in Mangalore Our Bureau
Mangalore , Sept. 14 THE Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has requested the Karnataka Government to hold its annual information technology event in Mangalore. This request comes at a time when some IT companies and industry bodies are threatening to boycott the annual `BangaloreIT.in', which is scheduled to be held from November 1 to 5. In a letter to the Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr Dharam Singh, - copies of which were released to the press here on Wednesday the KCCI President, Mr A. Srinivasa Rao, said the chamber will make all efforts to host a successful `IT.in' event, if the Government takes a favourable decision in this regard. Lauding the efforts of the Karnataka Government in promoting IT industry in Bangalore, he said a positive response by the Karnataka Government on hosting the IT event in Mangalore would give a big boost to the city's development. Mr Rao regretted the decision of the Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce (BCIC) to boycott the `BangaloreIT.in'. BCIC's decision to boycott the event follows a similar threat from the Bangalore Forum for Information Technology. It may be mentioned here that the IT industry has identified Mangalore as one of the tier-II cities in Karnataka for investments. Infosys Technologies Ltd, which has a software development centre in Mangalore, has also plans for further expansion. Recently, MphasiS opened a business processing outsourcing unit in Mangalore. Even the Karnataka Government is planning to set up an IT special economic zone here. In such a situation, a major IT event in the region will help in the development of the industry.
