`SBI recruiting from campuses'

L.N. Revathy

Coimbatore , Sept. 14

STATE Bank of India is now screening students for placement as `probationary officers' via the campus. Top secrecy is being maintained about this exercise at this juncture. Even the SBI staff claim to be unaware of this development.

A high-level recruitment team is said to be doing the rounds, visiting colleges, conducting exams and interviewing the eligible candidates the same day.

Sources say the team has completed the process of examination, interview and group discussion in places such as Guwahati, Pune, Chennai and Coimbatore.

The results have not been announced yet, though the elimination process for the interview was made known within hours of writing the test.

The test incidentally is not a common one. It is said to be open only to the candidates of that particular institution.

The General Secretary of the Federation of State Bank of India Officers' Association, Mr Shanta Raju, when contacted told Business Line that the probationary officer recruitment was for the `regular' category of officers. SBI, he said, was planning to place around 300-400 officers through the campus.

"We are opposing this route as the opportunity is limited to select colleges and students, but the bank is of the view that the common exam route would be a time-consuming task. They are targeting the arts and science colleges, and not the IIMs or the IITs," he said.

In Coimbatore, SBI had chosen the PSG College of Arts and Science.

The college Principal, Dr Sheela Ramachandran, said 89 students had taken the test of whom19 were shortlisted for the interview. "We do not know the outcome. The bank has promised to communicate."

SBI has in recent years recruited specialised agricultural officers and law-officers off-campus.
