Chennai , Sept. 14

TAMIL Nadu's software exports have more than trebled from Rs 3,115 crore in 2000-01 to Rs 10,703 crore in 2004-05, according to the Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa.

The Chief Minister was speaking at the inauguration of the Phase I of the International Tech Park, Chennai (ITPC).

The park has been jointly promoted by the Singapore-based Ascendas Pte Ltd and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO).

She said that information technology (IT) has powered the transformation of the State into a modern economy.

Tamil Nadu, she added, has emerged as a global leader in specific verticals.

The verticals included banking, financial services and insurance, health systems management, computer aided designing and computer aided engineering.

The focus is primarily on the high end of the value addition spectrum.

About 73 per cent of the State's exports constitute system and application software, while business process outsourcing (BPO) constitutes only five per cent.

Ms Jayalalithaa said that 210 wholly-owned subsidiaries and multinational companies in software development are located in Tamil Nadu.

On an average, one new IT company is born in Chennai every three days.

She added that apart from this park, more than 40 other IT parks were coming both in the pubic and private sector with a total build-up area of about 17 million sq. ft.

Speaking at the inauguration, Mr Tharman Shunmugaratnam, Singapore's Minister for Education, said there would be greater co-operation between Singapore and India after the signing of the Comprehensive Economic Co-operation Agreement.

He also planned a link up between schools and colleges in Chennai and Singapore.
