Policy Industry & Economy - Plastics Maharashtra notifies ban on plastic bags Our Bureau
Mumbai , Sept. 14 THE Maharashtra Government order seeking to ban the use of plastic bags was issued on Wednesday. The order is dated September 13, 2005. The order states that the Government has decided to declare the entire state "Plastic Bag Free Area". It may be recalled that the decision to ban plastic bags was taken by the Chief Minister, Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh, on August 24. Dr B.D. Boralkar, Member Secretary of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, told Business Line, "I definitely welcome the ban as it would reduce plastic waste generation and bring in discipline in municipal waste management." The order, made public today, called for objections and suggestions from the affected parties within 30 days, after which the ban on plastic bags would "be taken into consideration". "Every trader (including hawker), shopkeeper, wholesalers or retailer or any other person shall discontinue the use of polyethylene (plastic) bags, for packing, handling, storing, carrying or for any other purpose," the order states. It directs commissioners of municipal corporations, chief officers of municipal councils and district collectors to enforce the ban. The order does not mention whether the ban would be enforced after the 30-day period but only states that the ban would be "taken into consideration".
