Biodiesel alternatives

This refers to the various reports in Business Line regarding the use of biodiesel, which has the potential to change the rural landscape in our country.

While countries such as the US and Germany and many State Governments in India have made rapid strides in the promotion of biodiesel, it is alarming that the Central government has done precious little till date.

What is required from the central government is: Setting up a national biodiesel commission at the earliest; keeping abreast with the latest happenings abroad and suggesting the right formulations; working with manufacturers in India and abroad to come up with ideal formulations; consulting governments in other countries to identify best practices; mandating 100 per cent bio-diesel compliant vehicles in India over a stipulated time frame; assessing the cost structure of producing bio-diesel and offering technical expertise to growers and refiners; and formulating a suitable pricing and taxation structure to make bio-diesel viable.
