BSNL to make broadband gear at Kolkata unit

Thomas K. Thomas

New Delhi , Sept. 15

BHARAT Sanchar Nigam Ltd is planning to manufacture broadband equipment at its facility in Kolkata.

The State-owned company has issued a tender inviting Indian companies with the technological know-how for manufacturing one million units of broadband consumer premises equipment (CPE) every year.

BSNL has factories, which produce for captive consumption, in Kolkata, Mumbai, Jabalpur, Bhilai and Kharagpur. They have been manufacturing overhead line construction material and manual PBX's Trunk Boards. These factories are now looking at expanding their product portfolio and are also planning to manufacture mobile handsets.

The tender issued by BSNL is for the turnkey project for the supply, installation and commissioning of plant and machinery, including transfer of technology, to manufacture and test one million units of ADSL2+ CPE each year. The bidder will be required to suggest the infrastructure required for setting up the complete manufacturing and testing facilities and also give details on the capital investment and production line.

BSNL is moving into the broadband space as a service provider with a nationwide rollout using the latest ADSL2+ (Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line) technology. The target is to get nine million subscribers by 2007 and 20 million by 2010.
