THE President, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, on Thursday said India, with its current power generation of one trillion units a year, should aim at conserving at least 10-15 per cent energy.
"Presently, we are generating one trillion units of power. We are also using nearly 800 billion cubic meter (BCM) water both ground and surface. Our aim should be to conserve at least 10 to 15 per cent of energy, that is, 100 billion units and 10 per cent of water namely 80 BCM, which will have a large impact on our economy," Mr Kalam said inaugurating the two-day `Green Building Congress 2005' organised by CII here.
Mr Kalam said energy independence rested on two principles to use less energy to provide services and cutting down energy losses. "Simultaneously we should access technologies to provide a diverse supply of reliable, affordable, renewable and environmentally sustainable energy," he said.
"It is necessary to plug the technical and distribution losses. In addition our end user segments are not energy efficient, either. In a growing economy when our population is expected to grow approximately at 1.3 per cent, the energy consumption rate is expected to grow at 4.3 per cent per annum. This trend would strain the energy sector to a large extent," he said.
The event also saw Mr James E. Hartzfeld, former President, US Green Building Council presenting awards to rated green buildings in the country including ITC Green Centre (Gurgaon), Wipro Technologies (Gurgaon), Grundfos Pumps (Chennai) and NEG Micon (Chennai).
